HISTORY OF THE CITY OF KAVALA

The history of the city of Kavala counts twenty seven centuries. It was founded in the 7th century B.C. by the people from Paros and Thassos islands...

From the middle of the 7th century BC residents from the nearby island of Thassos and from the south of the Aegean Sea, from the island of Paros, settled in Kavala and established a colony, calling it Neapoli, with the main purpose to control the trade and to develop the gold-bearing activities in the mountain of Paggeio. Due to its privileged position and trading port, Neapoli became a tasty morsel for many conquerors and did not go unnoticed by Athens itself, which was interested in the development of Neapoli because of its important strategic location. While maintaining good relations with Athens, which at that time had great influence, Neapoli became financially independent and was given the right to print its own coins.

Niapolis blossomed in the lV century BC, under Philippe ll, the father of Alexander the Great, and lost its autonomy becoming the main port of the neighboring, majestic, Macedonian city of Philippi (whose ruins have survived to this day). After 400 years, Naples was under the power of the Romans and continued to flourish as the seaport of Philippi and the main trade road of Egnatius, connecting the West and the East with the vast Roman Empire, which left behind a rich cultural heritage. In the middle of the first century AD in the port of the city of Naples, the foot of the preacher of Christianity - the apostle Paul - steps. Not far from Philip, Paul was baptized the first Christian on European soil - Lydia. These places are considered the beginning of the Christianization of the entire European continent.

In the 8th century AD, Kavala is already called Christopolis (the city of Christ) and is part of the Byzantine state. The tragic fate befell the inhabitants in 1185, after the ruin of the city and its burning by the Normans. Then came the complete restoration of the city and in the 13th century, after Michael Palaeologus again conquered the capital of Byzantium, Christopolis became the possession of Constantinopolis and repeatedly passed into the hands of Byzantines and Venetians. In 1387, the city was captured and completely destroyed by the Turks. In 1425, the Venetians temporarily succeeded in defeating the city from the Ottomans, but the Turkish reinforcements arrived in time to defeat them, and approximately at this time, the policy is mentioned in sources called the city of Kavala.

At the turn of the XV and XVI centuries, the city known as Kavala grows and develops on the orders of Suleiman II. It was then, in 1530, was built one of the most interesting monuments of architecture - the aqueduct, called Kamares (to supply the city of Kavala with drinking water). In 1769, Mohammed Ali (Mehmet Ali), the founder of the Egyptian dynasty, was born here, and in 1817 Imaret was built by him - the marvelous beauty of the structure of Islamic architecture. In the XIX century. the townspeople took an active part in the liberation war of Greece, and in 1913 Kavala was completely liberated from Ottoman rule. The twentieth century finds Kavala at its peak, and the outlines of the already modern city appear.
