THE MONASTERY OF THE SAINT NICHOLAS AND THE CHURCH OF Panagia Pantanassa
Just 70 km to the north from Kavala city, close to the small village of Porto Lagos, on two small islands of the beautiful and picturesque lake Vistonida located a unique place a complex from the Monastery of St. Nicholas - area of Vatopedi Monastery on Mount Athos, and the Church of Panagia Pantanassa where is find the list of the miraculous image of the Mother of God Pantanassa, which is located in the Vatopedi monastery on Mount Athos!
The monastery of St. Nicholas is located on the island of Lake Vistonida, near the village of Porto Lagos and is the area of the Vatopedi Monastery on Athos and especially beloved in Greece. The monastery has great religious and historical values, being a true treasure for the region, and now operates as a pilgrim center, attracting pilgrims and visitors from different countries.
A few meters from the Monastery of Nicholas on the neighboring smaller island connected by a small wooden bridge, there is the Church of Panagia Pantanassa, where is located the list of the miraculous image of the Mother of God Pantanassa and here many patients and their families come to worship and ask for healing. The list like the miraculous icon gives healing especially from cancer.
The icon of the Mother of God itself is located in the Vatopedi monastery on the Holy Mountain Athos, and on the farmstead in Porto Lagos is kept its list from which miraculous healings among the oncological patients are also performed. The monks are remembered a lot of stories who were told by grateful people who received help from the Mother of God Pantanassa, after the pilgrimage that took place here.
According to the tradition and testimonies the Monastery of Nicholas was inaugurated by the patriarch Nectar in the presence of the Byzantine emperor Arkady, who transferred this site as a gift to the Vatopedi monastery, dedicating to the Mother of God Pantanassa, who saved him during a shipwreck on the way from Rome.
According to another legend in the area of Porto Lagos which during the Ottoman yoke was the state of one Bey, a monk ascended. When her daughter was ill, the monk cured her. As a token of gratitude, Bey donated this area to the Vatopedi monastery on Athos.
Now this unique place lives and receives pilgrims not only from Greece but also from all over the world. Each month four monks come from Mount Athos to Porto Lagos to replace their predecessors. The Monks of the ancient Vatoped from Mount Athos cordially greet the guests in Porto Lagos, trying to help everyone whom the God brings to this Holy place.
